Hey guys! I'm alive again! I have internet in my house now. In sadder news, it's back to work for me tomorrow. In other sad news, it's been 2 weeks since my husband left for his business trip...and he won't be back until mid-November. I'm lonely.

sorry to hear that, look through the basic info you may find why your crabs are passing. once you get the waters, foods temps & humidity right they are pretty easy to care for if you keep things pretty consistant

Unfortunately that's some of the pitfalls of trying to do a newsletter, especially on a forum.
You guys get a Great Big A++ for trying to make a go of it.

This is the same problem we had last time.
We just can't get enough news, and nobody's around.
Hey, I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say:
"Staff! Get back in here!" Because,
let's face it,
I'm hardly around either.

There apparently has been a delay due to Summer Vacation because there are several members that are involved with putting it together.

Around here there isn't any TRUE Mexican food.  :-(  It's all Tex-Mex ... Which is okay ... But I do miss REAL Mexican food.
August 10, 2010, 03:31:48 AM
I've been to a mexican rest. and they even had rotton mexicn food!
August 09, 2010, 10:00:35 PM
Chuckle...They probably say the same thing about us when we prepare their food.
August 09, 2010, 07:39:49 PM
It's official: Germans make TERRIBLE Mexican food. I mean, when you get the Mexican sampler platter for 2, do you expect Italian meatballs or some sort of strange salmon wrap?
August 08, 2010, 10:48:09 PM
I had breakfast for dinner last night- home fries/eggs YUMM
August 08, 2010, 10:16:45 PM

August 08, 2010, 08:35:38 PM
hey...breakfast is good at dinner.
Bacon, pancakes, orange juice, hmmmmm.......
August 08, 2010, 07:49:56 PM
I'm thinking breakfast for dinner.  Really I'm just craving bacon but a huge plate of bacon for dinner seems kinda silly ...
August 08, 2010, 05:58:25 AM
I agree with you there, scobdoo! If I have kids, they aren't getting all the new video game systems...they'll have legos, blocks, and bikes, and I'll make them play outside! Maybe even unsupervised like I did when I was a kid...

Hi!  I am new here and fairly new to crabs, but learning everyday!  I have 4 crabs, Hermie, Sara, Acrobat(pronounced ahkcobot), and Chihuahua(pronounced cheewawa).  I beleive the last three are PP's but I am not quite sure on Hermie.  I have had sare for I think, 2 years?   But I just recently realized that a critter keeped, commercial food, water, and a sponge was NOT all she needed  oops.  I recently got Hermie from a freind and now have them both in a 10 gallon with good temp and I keep forgetting to set the hygrometer but I don't think the humidity is too bad.  I got Acro and Chi about a week ago and they are currently in iso but will be moving to the main tank soon Smiley.  I am also developing my own recepie using many recorces on proper hermie diet I found.  Well,  I think that is all.  I will post pictures of my "kids" tomorrow Wink.

We're glad to have you here.

Humidity and temperature are extremely important to the health of the crab. Here is a suggestion on 'How to calibrate you gage".

It's good to make sure your gages are reading correctly. Here's how!
1. Get 2 heavy duty zip lock baggies.
2. table salt
3. small container for salt( 2 liter soda bottle top for example)

Put the salt in the container. Put a few drops of water onto the salt, just to moisten the salt. Then place the container inside the baggie. Now place the gauger in the baggie. Make sure you have this in a spot somewhere that no small kids can get to or that it can be knocked over. Wait between 4-6 hours. When you check it after that amount of time, look in the bag without opening it.Your gauger should be reading 75%. If it IS NOT, then thats how much your gauger is off by.

For those that have a set screw or other adjustment on their hydrometer  (humidity gage):
To fix this you can get a small screwdriver and turn the screw on the gauger. If it's off by 7%(68%) then turn it so it reads 7% higher.

If it isn't adjustable, then you will have to remember how much it is off by and add/subtract degree's accordingly.

Crab of the Month

This is Wasabi. He is a PP, (Purple Pincher) and sadly, he has passed on. He was the biggest out of all the crabs I have owned so far, and out of them all, he lived the longest. He lived about 6-7 months.

Facts

Land hermit crabs store a small amount of water in their shells just to keep their gills wet, thus allowing them to breath.
